End the Clutter International was originally established in 2003 by two professional organizers in Vancouver. In addition to completing home and office consultations, Paul Talbot and Alison Roberts had busy teaching schedules and offered monthly de-clutter support groups. With a detailed listing of classes and support groups, ETC quickly became a resource for people wanting help with their clutter. In 2004 Paul and Alison coordinated a Community Recycling Event at the Vancouver Public Library. The general public dropped off old eyeglasses that were sent overseas, books that were received by Friends of the Library and of course car loads of household goods and clothing that were eagerly accepted by the YWCA and Salvation Army Thrift Stores. In addition, hundreds of old batteries were collected for safe disposal, expired medication was accepted by a neighbourhood pharmacy and half a tractor trailer (yes, that’s correct!) full of old computers, keyboards and mice were collected by Genesis Recycling. Oh, and old cell phones were collected as well. Based on the success of this event, both Paul and Alison realized that ETC could play a key role not only in helping people to conquer their clutter, but in raising funds as well. Since then, ETC has evolved to include a directory of professional organizers and allied professionals and serves as a forum to notify the public about upcoming events, fund-raising initiatives, products and resources. Today, Paul continues to reside in Vancouver and has extended his teaching and speaking engagements to the UK. Alison has re-located to Vancouver Island and resides in the Comox Valley. Both are successful authors and continue to share their expertise with individuals, non-profit organizations and businesses. |
